Brief Description:
A trebuchet is a massive, gravity-powered medieval siege weapon used to hurl heavy projectiles. It features a large wooden beam pivoting on an elevated fulcrum: one short end held a massive counterweight, while the long end was equipped with a rope sling used to launch stones, burning pitch, or debris over castle walls.
How it Works:
The Lever and Fulcrum: The weapon consists of a long, asymmetrical wooden beam mounted on a sturdy wooden frame. The pivot point (fulcrum) is positioned closer to one end.
The Counterweight: The short end of the beam holds a heavy ballast, which could weigh up to 30 tons. This counterweight was typically a large wooden box filled with stones, dirt, and sand, though solid lead or stone blocks were sometimes used.
The Sling: Instead of a fixed cup, a rope sling held the payload. This sling trailed behind the long arm on the ground, creating a specialized whip-like mechanical advantage that allowed the weapon to generate far more kinetic energy and launch heavier payloads than traditional spring or tension catapults.
The Launch: Crews would use winches and ropes to pull the long end of the arm down, which simultaneously winched the heavy counterweight high into the air. Once loaded with a projectile, the trigger mechanism was released, allowing gravity to violently drop the counterweight. This swung the long arm upward, releasing the projectile from the sling at high velocity.
