Brief Description:  The Jian is a traditional Chinese straight, double-edged sword known in folklore as the "Gentleman of Weapons". Ranging from 26 to 32 inches in total blade length, the Jian is highly agile, balancing precision thrusts with controlled cuts. Originally a battlefield arm, it evolved into a mark of aristocratic and scholarly status.

Anatomical & Design Features:

Blade (Jianti): Symmetrical, slender, and double-edged, gradually tapering to a precise point. Crafted for both thrusting and executing precise slashes.

Guard (Jian Ge): Distinctively small compared to European swords. Usually shaped like a pair of wings (pointing up or down) or sometimes a small disc, designed to protect the hand without weighing down the blade.

Hilt: Typically a single-handed grip made of wood wrapped in cord, silk, or ray skin for grip and shock absorption.

Pommel: A simple, symmetrical counterweight at the base of the handle, locking the tang securely and balancing the sword so the center of gravity rests near the hand.

Tassel (Jian Sui): Often seen in modern training, historically used as a wrist tether to prevent losing the weapon, and occasionally wielded to distract opponents.
