Military Role:
Cogs were the heavy-lift merchant vessels of the medieval period, routinely adapted for naval warfare. Their key capabilities included carrying 20 to 50 combatants, elevated fighting platforms (fore and stern castles) that made boarding difficult, and, by the late 14th century, early gunpowder artillery.
Combatant Capacity: Cogs could accommodate 20 to 50 soldiers in addition to their core crew, making them excellent troop transports.
Defensive Structures: Unlike older vessels, cogs were built with high freeboards (the distance from the waterline to the deck). When retrofitted with fore and stern castles, they provided elevated platforms that allowed archers to fire downward and repel boarders.
Tactical Approach: Medieval naval combat rarely focused on sinking vessels. Instead, battles centered on capturing ships, so the cog's high sides and sturdy build made it an ideal, defensible fortress for close-quarters fighting and boarding actions.
Early Artillery: While primarily reliant on medieval naval archery (using crossbows and longbows), large cogs began incorporating early gunpowder artillery—such as small cannons (bombards)—at the bow and stern by the late 14th century.
Brief Description:
The medieval cog was a robust, clinker-built cargo vessel that doubled as a warship, relying on its flat bottom and high sides to carry bulk goods and deter attackers. Used primarily by the Hanseatic League, these single-masted ships were heavily relied upon for naval defense and conflict during the 13th to 15th centuries.
Key Characteristics of a Cog Warship:
Hull & Design: Cogs featured flat, flush-laid bottoms and high, overlapping clinker-built sides. This gave the vessel massive internal capacity but also made it extremely difficult for enemy boarders to climb the towering hull.
Propulsion: They were rigged with a single large, square sail on a thick forward mast.
Steering: Cogs were uniquely equipped with a stern-mounted, hanging central rudder, which was a massive upgrade in maneuverability over traditional steering oars.
