Armor Type:  Upper arm armor

Brief Description:  A rerebrace (pronounced "reer-brace") is a piece of medieval plate armor designed to protect the bicep and tricep. It spans the area between the shoulder defense (the pauldron or spaulder) and the elbow protection (the couter or cowter).

Here are the key characteristics of a rerebrace:

Function: It shielded the upper arm from slashing blows, blunt trauma, and thrusts in hand-to-hand combat.

Design: It typically consisted of a tubular or semi-cylindrical metal plate that wrapped around the arm, often constructed with overlapping metal bands called lames.

Articulation: These overlapping lames allowed the knight to bend and rotate their arm freely without compromising defense.

Attachment: They were generally strapped securely to the arm with adjustable leather straps or laced to an underlying arming doublet, and were tightly integrated with the couter below it.
